Cross a Big Ocean: Getting from Point A to Point B on the Ocean of Life

At 25, Chuck drifted to St. Thomas on a one-way plane ticket and came of age through a series of adventures, starting as a bouncer in a working-sailors' bar and ending up as crew on a 53-foot sloop crossing the North Atlantic. Chuck stepped off that boat a changed man, at the helm of his life and charting a new course. In this presentation, Chuck passes along techniques for getting from point A to point B on the big ocean of life, learned through his wide variety of life experiences, and particularly through that transatlantic voyage.

                                Participants will get:

                                • A clear, immediately applicable approach to planning and reaching long-term professional and personal goals.
                                • Techniques for dealing with set-backs and obstacles, and for staying motivated day-in and day-out, even when the long-term goal seems impossible

Embracing Diversity: A Humorous and Thought-Provoking Take on the Advantages of Transcending the Tribe

Drawing from the wisdom of Henry David Thoreau, the foibles of human nature and the perilous adventures of combining family and regional cultures, Chuck explores why embracing diversity is so hard for human beings to do. With self-deprecating humor and sharp insights, he discusses the advantages of diversity, the dangers of conformity, and why it's such a challenge for his genteel Southern wife to break bread with his freewheeling Yankee family. Participants will receive strong reinforcement for the concept of multiculturalism in work and life, presented in Chuck's trademark warm and humorous style.

The Psychology of Long Odds: Framing Next-to-Impossible Goals and Staying Motivated in the Process

In this session, Chuck outlines for the attendees a philosophy and process for setting next-to-impossible goals and then pursuing those goals so as to stay motivated and optimize the chances for achieving them.

                                • Many people have, as their goal, to achieve very unlikely success - become a best-selling and subsequently wealthy writer, for example. The problem is that with these next-to-impossible goals, only a precious few - 1 in a 1,000? 2,000? 10,000? 50,000? 100,000? Probably more like 1 in 250,000 -- achieve that goal.
                                • The rest are foiled by the long odds of achieving such a goal and other issues that are completely out of their control - even though many of those who fall short have done everything within their power to achieve the goal. In their minds, they unjustly regard themselves as failures in their life's work.
                                • In fact, all they failed to do was set appropriate goals. Yet, these people wind up "leading lives of quiet desperation" - a genuine human tragedy.
                                • Chuck's new approach, which he calls "The Psychology of Long Odds," can help one better define success, set the right kinds of goals, and optimize ones chances of achieving those goals (even the most unlikely ones), and all the while improve the chances of finding fulfillment and self-actualization.

Participants in these sessions will receive:

                                • A foundationally new and healty approach for framing, setting and pursuing the most difficult goals in life: The Psychology of Long Odds.
                                • Strategies for executing on this new approach to goal setting.
                                • Simple, easy to use but effective hand-out materials for use in the pursuit of these unlikely goals.
                                • As a result of using The Psychology of Long Odds, a more fulfilling view on success and life.
                                • Chuck's book, Build Your Castles in the Air: Thoreau’s Inspiring Advice for Success in Business (and Life) in the 21st Century, can be made available to each participant as part of the speaking engagement at a reduced cost per copy.
