There is only one way out

How I see the situation today in our country as it relates to the "two sides" (which is a simplification):

We are like two men who have found themselves swimming in the middle of the ocean, tied inextricably together at the wrists. If they beat the hell out of each other, they both drown. If one beats the hell out of the other one, they both die - he can't swim to safety dragging the inert body of the other. There is no way either will survive if they both don't work with each other. And I mean this literally - the country cannot survive if we don't find a way to work with each other.

Unless we've decided that the only solution for political and policy differences is to kill our opponents (and in the process, kill ourselves), then the only way out is to find people on the other side we can work with, figure out mutually (un)satisfactory half-steps and solutions we can both live with, and then repeat.
